Just tried to log into my Gmail account and I received this error message. 30 seconds later it did work again. Since I took the screenshot, I wanted to post it anyhow. But I also googled "gmail server error" and found some other people (here and here) who recently had similar problems. Does anybody have statistics about the reliability of webmail services such as Yahoo!Mail, Hotmail or Gmail? I recently discussed with a colleague the top ten reasons for users to churn away from a particular Internet service, and we had the chance to go over some survey data where in fact "ability to easily log in or download email" was named a top ten criteria for staying with an email service provider (or not, for that matter). It would be interesting to know if broader data exists, to see if there are any particular clusters among webmail users that allow to draw segments.

I had the exact same problem with Gmail and more than once.
I am personnaly Poping thru Outlook my Gmail accounts. I get very often a logon error.
It is obvious that Google should increase their quality services if they intend to become a major email provider.

http://gmail.google.com does not work
after 180 seconds (smells like a timeout), firefox: "The server at gmail.google.com is taking too long to respond."
Been like that since Monday evening (Apr 3rd).
Found another link by googling.
https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail
Log in there and select gmail on the left.
http://mail.google.com/mail?view=pr&fs=1
is the url after the login.
Worked from this morning.
Only way I can get in so far.
Sometimes I get my old friend , the gmail "Server Error" using this method, but what can you do when the main link is banjaxed?
I can ping google.com fine.
I can ping mail.google.com fine
If I ping gmail.google.com which is the one I wanted before all this, I get a smile on my face seeing:
Line 1:PINGING gmail.l.google.com (66.102.11.107) 56(84) bytes of data.
Line 2:--- gmail.l.google.com ping statistics ---
Line 3:47 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 46024ms
If I use IE under XP, I get the same.
Annoying, but I can't complain because I don't have to pay for it.
